While the pandemic has severely strained the global economy, it has also revealed that the\u00a0most sustainable businesses<\/strong>\u00a0have been better equipped to cope with the new challenges and are therefore\u00a0more resilient<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The results of a\u00a0BlackRock<\/strong>\u00a0survey of more than 200 investors show that\u00a0sustainability<\/strong>\u00a0has now become a\u00a0structural trend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Being sustainable is no longer optional, but a necessary requirement for any business that wants to be a key player in the future.<\/p>\n

It is therefore no surprise that in recent years\u00a0green bonds<\/strong>\u00a0have become increasingly popular both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n

Europe is driving this change and, in this context,\u00a0Italy<\/strong>\u00a0is playing a\u00a0leading<\/strong>\u00a0role. Indeed, four Italian companies (ENEL, ENI, Pirelli and Terna) have been instrumental to creation of the\u00a0CFO Taskforce<\/strong>, set up by the UN Global Compact to support companies in the process of aligning their finance strategies with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n

Large companies are the first to recognize the\u00a0economic and financial value<\/strong>\u00a0of sustainability and\u00a0ENEL<\/strong>\u00a0has even included a plan devoted entirely to sustainability in its strategy. The company is a prime example of\u00a0sustainable finance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Nicole Della Vedova<\/strong>, Head of Corporate Finance, observes, sustainability and\u00a0innovation<\/strong>\u00a0are two mutually reinforcing concepts for ENEL, which is why the company is always looking for new instruments to adopt. In addition to green bonds, Enel was the first company to issue\u00a0Sustainability-Linked Bonds<\/strong>, bonds linked to a specific target that must be reached within a certain time frame.<\/p>\n

Another example of the\u00a0successful combination of finance and sustainability<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0Flowe<\/strong>, a benefit corporation owned by Banca Mediolanum, defined by\u00a0Oscar di Montigny<\/strong>, Chief Innovation, Sustainability & Value Strategy Officer, as a\u00a0platform company\u00a0<\/strong>designed to provide financial services in a sustainable way.<\/p>\n

Reducing its CO2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions, helping to curb deforestation and preserving marine biodiversity are just some of the actions taken by Flowe. According to di Montigny, being sustainable not only means responding to the emergencies we are facing but, above all, it means adopting a\u00a0new lifestyle<\/strong>. Sustainability is closely linked to the concept of\u00a0interdependence<\/strong>: Being sustainable means protecting the community that you belong to and aiming to reduce your impact on it to zero.<\/p>\n

Increasingly \u201cgreen\u201d investments<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to\u00a0Giovanni Sandri<\/strong>, Head of BlackRock Italy, in the coming years we will witness\u00a0a major reallocation of capital toward a sustainable economy<\/strong>. BlackRock\u2019s survey shows that this journey of change is only just beginning, as there are still many\u00a0challenges<\/strong>\u00a0to face, most notably that of finding good-quality data. This problem stems from the lack of standard data collection methodologies. In the meantime, however, institutional investors are working to\u00a0standardize taxonomy<\/strong>\u00a0with a view to defining a shared language and methodology.<\/p>\n

Europe, in particular, has set out\u00a0six environmental goals<\/strong>\u00a0on which it wishes to focus:<\/p>\n

  1. Climate change mitigation<\/li>\n
  2. Adaptation to climate change<\/li>\n
  3. Sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources<\/li>\n
  4. Transition to a circular economy<\/li>\n
  5. Pollution prevention and control<\/li>\n
  6. Protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Consequently, Europe has stipulated that in order to be\u00a0considered truly sustainable<\/strong>, economic activities must meet the following\u00a0requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
